Azafady's Community Health Department aims to create sustainable improvements to the health of vulnerable communities in south east Madagascar.

Rural Water & Sanitation
Azafady responded to overwhelming demand from more than 20 rural communities for access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities by constructing wells and latrines as well as providing participatory education sessions about the causes of ill health.

Supporting Women's Associations to Improve Maternal Health
Azafady built the capacity of 6 women's associations in the urban commune of Fort Dauphin through a peer educator training programme focused on maternal health and HIV. This project also involved setting up the first ever antenatal group in Fort Dauphin.

Rural Nutrition
Azafady worked with 42 isolated rural communities to build their capacity to combat malnutrition, specifically targeting pregnant women and children under 5 years old.

Urban Sanitation in Fort Dauphin
Azafady worked to improve public health and promote economic development through tourism in the urban commune of Fort Dauphin, with the provision of communal latrines near popular beaches.

HIV Awareness & Sexual Behaviour Change  
Azafady is working with young people aged 13–24 across the urban commune of Fort Dauphin to encourage the adoption of safer sexual practices and reduce the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Maternal and Child Health Research
Azafady is exploring the factors that affect women and children's access to health services in Fort Dauphin in order to develop a comprehensive long-term coordinated intervention to reduce maternal and child mortality. Interactive research activities including detailed case studies and focus groups are being used to understand informal support structures including community midwives.

Community-Led Total Sanitation & Well Repair Training 
Azafady is working with rural villages to trigger a participatory process whereby whole communities are motivated to completely eliminate open defecation through the construction of their own latrines. Training is also being provided in well repair and pump maintenance to ensure ongoing access to clean drinking water.

Sexual Health Education in Schools
Azafady is building the capacity of high school students to act as peer educators, delivering information about the prevention of HIV, STIs and unwanted pregnancies, as well as facilitating educational activities that encourage sustained sexual behaviour change including condom use.

Eliminating Open Defecation in Fort Dauphin
Azafady is working to eliminate the practice of open defecation in the urban commune of Fort Dauphin by mobilising the community through workshops, carnival events, and a high profile participatory multimedia advertising campaign. Over 1,000 of the poorest households are being provided with access to hygienic sanitation infrastructure as part of this project.
