FACTS |
Alkaloids in the Rosy Periwinkle, a plant native to Madagascar, are used in the drug treatments for two of the deadliest forms of cancer - childhood leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease.
Western pharmaceuticals companies gain some $250 million in profits each year from the manufacture and sale of these drugs which result in up to 90% remissions from these diseases. Most of the population in Madagascar meanwhile have no access to clean water or basic healthcare, and children commonly die from easily preventable diseases. |
