  About the Pioneer Internship Program
..................................................................................................
Joining the Pioneer Internship Program means that you will be living, working and travelling amongst some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Madagascar. The program offers the opportunity to work in hands-on situations alongside village communities with an international team of experienced project leaders. Interns take part in a range of practical construction work, conservation research and educational activities as required by Azafady's projects, which focus on health & sanitation, sustainable livelihoods and conservation. Pioneer volunteer and intern groups contribute to the projects that the Malagasy NGO Azafady runs in the town of Fort Dauphin and in the surrounding rural villages.

You will be actively involved in many aspects of our work, based at our research and development stations scattered around the traditional fishing & farming region of Anosy. This is an invaluable opportunity for you to gain on-the-ground experience that will assist you to pursue a career in development and/or conservation work, with an organisation that has a proven track record in these fields. Any active person over the age of 18 may become an Intern, as all required skills are taught. However, while practical & research experience is welcome, enthusiasm & sensitivity are a must. Successful applicants will learn skills associated with conservation and rural development work.

The Pioneer Internship Program is very similar to the Pioneer Volunteer Program, however, it provides several additional factors that allow it to qualify as an internship. The internship program is aimed at American Students although not limited to them. Azafady understands that many students prefer to take part in an internship rather then a volunteer program. As a result we have adapted our volunteer program to suit the needs of those interested in interning and the additional benefits that it may bring.

The major difference between an intern and a volunteer relates to the amount of mentorship and self-evaluation. Part of an internship requires there to be frequent feedback from supervisors, and this is an integral part of our internship program.

It will introduce you to first-hand the particular needs of some of the poorest people on earth, while being a chance to discover some of the treasures of this precious and mysterious eighth continent.

"It has been an amazing experience - brilliant fun, enlightening, testing, rewarding and very memorable. I always felt safe and that any time, any place, if I needed help or advice someone would be there to talk to. I have learnt a lot about how an NGO operates in the 'real world' and the true struggles of both the people running such charities and the people who they are helping."
Cat Phelps, July 2001.

MADAGASCAR FACTS
Lemurs, a group of primates are only found on Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. There are 50 species of lemurs and 17 are on the endangered species list. Habitat loss is the main threat to lemurs today, as people driven by poverty, clear their native forests for farm land.
