Azafady Conservation Programme - Construction

This module is aimed at group applications rather than individuals – an ideal opportunity for a team building exercise or corporate social responsibility project.

Volunteers will spend two weeks living in a small Malagasy fishing village, helping to construct a permanent research station to enable a permanent residence for Azafady staff and volunteers in Sainte Luce. Volunteers will benefit from the cultural experience as well as learning skills involved in construction and team work.

The work is also vital for the successful operation of the conservation project and thus helping to conserve the flora and fauna of Sainte Luce. The conservation project is to be a long term research project permanently based in Sainte Luce which will require the necessary infrastructure. Currently, Azafady own an area of land which encompasses the tree nursery (see Map below). The existing Azafady campsite is over eight years old and has a very basic infrastructure designed for only short periods of stay.

Aims and Objectives

The major aim of the construction module is to compliment the conservation project through the production of the necessary infrastructure to enable permanent residence in Sainte Luce. This will involve the construction of a research station, store room, kitchen, toilets, showers, staff accommodation, and volunteer accommodation.

Methods

The conservation module is most relevant to established groups of volunteers who are interested in short-term construction projects, possibly for team building exercises. These could be college, university or corporate groups. Funding from groups of volunteers will cover their expenses whilst on the project and the cost of the construction. Each group of volunteers will have one aspect of the infrastructure to complete during the scheme.
